HUNGARIAN STUDIES – FROM HERITAGE TO THE FUTURE
The aim of the presentation is to briefly review the more than 100 years of Hungarian Studies and to outline where Hungarian Studies is heading today in the 21st century, what are the challenges we face in a globalizing world with regard to content and methodology. As the historical context and culture change, new research areas are coming to the fore, such as the study of international parallels or adaptation processes. One thing, however, remains the same, Hungarian Studies has always examined Hungarian culture from a special, external perspective, thus creating a bridge between different cultures.
Throughout history, the objectives and institutional background of Hungarian Studies have been changed. The intensive development of the 1920-1940s was followed by a period of stagnation, but from the late 1980s modern Hungarian Studies emerged. Hungarian Institutes have been opened, and universities have started to offer MA in Hungarian Studies since 2010. Due to the Belt and Road Initiative programme, several Hungarian departments and research centres have been launched in China as well.
In the lecture, a few recent achievements of Hungarian culture will be discussed, and finally, I will review how the Hungarian Studies program of the University of Szeged has fostered international students to acquire the most up-to-date knowledge of Hungarian language and culture since 1971.
